“Overall crime in Chicago decreased in February 2020 compared to the same month last year despite an eruption of gun violence, according to statistics released by Chicago police.”
Despite the decrease of crime within February of this year, the Chicago Police Department unveiled a 41% increase in murders and a 25% increase in shootings compared to February 2019.
There were two mass shootings last month. One took place on Valentine’s Day when a gunman shot and wounded six people at an apartment in Parkway Gardens. Another tragedy took place on Feb. 25th, when three males opened fired into an Avalon Park convenience store, killing one person and wounding four others.
Mayor Lightfoot urges that people put the guns down and respect life. ” You’re not a punk or weak if you carry a gun.”
“Overall violent crime — including murders, robberies, burglaries, thefts and motor vehicle thefts —were down by 3%, police said. Thefts saw a 13% decrease and burglaries dropped by 9% compared to the same period last year.”
